What are the symptoms?

The classic symptom of chickenpox is a large, widespread rash that causes itchy blisters all over the body and face. These blisters may even develop in the mouth or genital region. It’s common for those infected to experience fever, fatigue, and headaches for a couple of days before the rash appears. In about one week, these blisters will scab over and eventually go away.

How is chickenpox treated?

Symptoms will usually go away on their own without treatment. You may choose to apply topical ointments such as calamine lotion to the body to reduce itching. Cold compresses and lukewarm oatmeal baths can also provide relief.

Whatever you do, do not scratch blisters, as this can lead to permanent scarring. Rarely do complications occur with chickenpox; however, there are certain people who may develop a severe case of chickenpox. Those at high risk for health complications associated with chickenpox are,

  • Pregnant women
  • Infants
  • Teens
  • Those with weak immune systems

Is there a way to prevent chickenpox?

The best way to protect against the chickenpox is to receive a vaccination from your dermatologist in Buffalo, NY. Anyone can get vaccinated, from children and teens to adults. If you have never had chickenpox before, then it’s highly recommended that you get the chickenpox vaccine.
